Gangdong-gu Accelerates Fostering a Pleasant and Safe Environment for Pedestrians- Gangdong-gu devised a comprehensive plan for fostering a pleasant and safe environment for pedestrians for 2024- Installation and renovation of traffic safety facilities in light of the convenience of pedestrians, and improvement of school zonesThe Gangdong-gu Provincial Government (Head: Lee Soo-hee) announced that it would establish the 2014 Comprehensive Plan for Fostering a Pleasant and Safe Environment for Pedestrians (“Comprehensive Plan”) to ensure safety for the vulnerable road users, such as children. The Comprehensive Plan is aimed at fostering a traffic environment that ensures the safety of vulnerable road users. It specifies (a) increasing the number of school zones; (b) offering traffic safety education to children; (c) installing speed cameras; (d) installing smart pedestrian crossings; (e) renovating the traffic safety facilities in school zones; (f) conducting a campaign for children’s walking safety.
In particular, Gangdong-gu will improve commute routes in school zones and install and renovate pedestrian-first roads in an effort to prevent accidents involving children and pedestrians. Gangdong-gu will continue its renovation projects, including renovating the traffic safety facilities and road surface markings, as well as replacing road signs, to ensure proper management of traffic safety facilities in light of the convenience of pedestrians.
Last year, Gangdong-gu successfully carried out the following projects to improve the safety of vulnerable road users: (a) installation and expansion of three school zones; (b) installation of 13 speed cameras within school zones; (c) construction of 161 smart pedestrian crossings with road-embedded traffic lights and audio guidance systems; and (d) installation of diagonal crossings in school zones. In addition, Gangdong-gu has promoted 23 projects, including repairing 121 obsolete traffic safety facilities and renovating road surface markings equivalent to a length of 20,740 meters, to create a pedestrian-friendly environment. “Gangdong-gu will examine whether the pedestrian environment is free of inconvenience or safety issues and create a safe and pleasant city friendly to pedestrians. We will put the children’s safety along routes in school zones at the top of our agenda,” said Lee Soo-hee, the head of Gangdong-gu.
